Plans, sections, elevations 1:200

Report

The main guidelines from the group project suggested to keep the building within the traces of the ones that used to occupy the plaza prior to the 19th – century “liberation”; to develop a building that “talked” differently to the Cathedral and the Plaza, and that hindered the plaza as little as possible. Starting from the latter point, I decided to keep the building in a very compressed area, and to renounce to the entrace volume, preferring the use of a ramp (which runs parallel with the traffic road, in order not to invade the plaza) to access the building. In order to have a useful urban space on the ground floor, the first floor is located at 4.5 meters from the ground, and the ramp follows the French regulations for pedestrian ramps, which prescribe a 7% slope for <5m height differences.

This created the opportunity to develop an enveloped outside space on the first floor, as a welcoming area for the visitors. Hence, the idea to locate another one, but on the second floor, at the opposite end of the building, and in general to “play” with the section of the building while at the same time keeping the outside volume as neat and compact as possible, and keeping the routes and paths within the building itself simple (for the visitors) and easily controllable (for the personnel) at the same time.
Since the Cafè on the ground floor "serves" the plaza, the enveloped terrace hosts a second cafè which serves only the museum.
